Le programme SETI@home est un écran de veille assez particulier. Comme tous les autres écrans de veille, il démarre lorsque vous laissez votre ordinateur inutilisé, et il s'arrête dès que vous reprenez votre travail. Mais ce qu'il fait durant l'intérim est assez unique. Alors que vous allez prendre un café, ou partez déjeuner ou dormir, votre ordinateur aidera à la Recherche d'une Intelligence Extraterrestre (alias SETI en Anglais) en analysant les données spécialement collectées par le plus grand radio-télescope du monde.

• November 20, 2008: Check out the new Spanish-language site, BOINC SETI Chile.
• November 14, 2008: The CASPER/SETI@home/Astropulse teams wrote a joint paper about New SETI Sky Surveys for Radio Pulses. Warning: highly technical (to be published in Acta Astronautica).
• November 3, 2008: We're looking for an attorney to assist us with setting up a charitable 501(c)(3) foundation which will handle fundraising operations for the SETI@home project.
• October 17, 2008: Some of our volunteers have started a Halloween Donation Challenge. Feel free to beat the holiday rush. Assuming your bank is still in business, and you can still afford it.
• September 24, 2008: By the way... SETI@home just received its billionth result using BOINC - thanks to everybody who donated their computing power to help us reach this incredible milestone!

• Solar Wind Rips Up Martian Atmosphere: The solar wind appears to be ripping big chunks of air from the atmosphere of Mars. This could help solve a longstanding mystery about the Red Planet.
• Discovered: Cosmic Rays from a Mysterious, Nearby Object: An international team of researchers has discovered a puzzling surplus of high-energy electrons bombarding Earth from space. The source of these cosmic rays is unknown, but it must be close to the solar system and it could be made of dark matter.
• Hubble Directly Observes a Planet Orbiting Another Star: NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has taken the first visible-light snapshot of a planet circling another star. The planet, called 'Fomalhaut b', orbits the bright southern star Fomalhaut, located 25 light-years from Earth.
• NASA Begins Hunt for New Meteor Showers: NASA astronomers have set up a monitoring station to scan the night sky for unknown or unexpected meteor showers--and they're finding more than they bargained for.
• Solar Cycle Update: The Sun Shows Signs of Life: A surge of new-cycle sunspots in October may signal the beginning of the end of the ongoing solar minimum.

Logiciels

Bon, alors voici quelques logiciels gratuits d'astronomie que j'ai découvert récemment et trouvé absolument merveilleux :

• Stellarium : Stellarium est un simulateur de ciel en temps réel. Avec Stellarium, vous voyez vraiment ce que vous pouvez voir avec vos yeux ou un petit télescope. Il est disponible pour Linux, Windows et Mac.
• Celestia : Celestia est un simulateur d'univers avec lequel vous pouvez naviguer en trois dimensions. Contrairement aux autres simulateurs d'univers, Celestia ne vous confine pas à la surface de la Terre. Vous pouvez voyager dans notre galaxie, ou même au-delà de notre galaxie. Celestia fonctionne également sur Windows, Linux, et Mac.
• Google Earth : Il ne s'agit pas vraiment d'un logiciel d'astronomie mais comme on peut y faire un vol plané de la terre via un collage extrêmement bien réussi d'images satellites, je trouvais pertinent de vous le faire découvrir.
